First Veteran Burial at Woodman
The first veteran to be buried in Woodman of the World Cemetery was Hikokichi Suzuki born 1868, birthplace unknown, and passed away on March 11, 1918 at Bunker Hill. Mr. Suzuki held an honorable discharge from the American Navy having served ten years in service.
He was given a soldiers’ burial in the new cemetery. He is buried in section East 1, Row A, Plot 14.
His original wooden headstone has been lost to the environment. The Big Pine Cemetery District is working with the Inyo County Veteran’s office to attain a new military headstone. In the meantime, a temporary headstone has been placed by the Cemetery District.
