Kahl’s Bakery & Much More…

William Kahl Sr. was born in Hamburg, German on Aug. 3, 1889. He emigrated to the United States in 1916 and lived in Big Pine for 30 years before passing on April 7, 1951 in Bishop.
William married Lillie Hagood (1892-1935) on Aug. 15, 1917 in Florida. Together they had one child, William Kahl Jr. born 1923 in Los Angeles. The Kahl family owned and operated numerous businesses in Big Pine.

In the Nov. 1922 Big Pine Citizen, they announced the purchase of the Big Pine Bakery. The article states, “completely remodel it in every way and installed modern and sanitary machinery.” In 1936 they owned the Texaco Station; 1939 the Meats & Grocery store; 1941 they had a hotel and the Drugs & Café shop.
